" Making Goat Cheese 101" 11a-12:30 and 1p-2:30 with Carolyn Joyce- First UCC Kitchen- 300 Union St Learn to make the simplest of cheeses in this session. Chèvre is a tasty soft cheese prepared with goat milk. We will learn key ingredients to fresh chèvre, cheese making supplies and where to get them, simple steps to prepare in your kitchen and recipes to enjoy. You will gain confidence and insight to soft cheese making at home. Explore several chèvre recipes and go home inspired to make and cook with your new found cheese making skills!" Join Simple Harvest Farm Organics as they teach you how to make wool dryer balls from their Icelandic sheep wool. Wool dryer balls are great: they are chemical-free and last forever! The first 10 to sign up for each session receives free materials and teaching for the first ball. Otherwise it is $8 to make the first wool dryer ball. Extra wool will be available at $1/ounce so you can go home and make more balls. Some even say it lessens your total drying time. (You need at least 4 balls per dryer; approximately 4 ounces of wool per ball.) Questions? We'll also learn how to do basic bicycle maintenance such as fixing a flat tire, chain maintenance, etc. Feel free to come with questions about your bike or biking! Plus, our "Mobile Bike Unit" will be on hand to help with minor repairs and maintenance. Riders of all levels and interests are encouraged to attend! If you are under 14 please bring a parent with you. All participants will be asked to sign a waiver of liability. Come to the workshop to learn how to make your own Kombucha using sugar, black tea and a bacteria and yeast culture (provided). Please bring a 1.5 liter Mason jar and your enthusiasm for fermentation. Our precious oceans provide food and livelihoods to billions of people around the globe, but as more CO2 is absorbed into ocean waters, they are becoming more acidic, and this is jeopardizing the marine food chain, to our peril. Come to this session to learn the science and what you can do to prevent catastrophic damage to our oceans. This project entails deciding the size of the bed, sawing and screwing the cedar beds together as well as preparing soil and filling the beds with dirt. Planting of the beds will take place at a different day. If you are under 14 please be accompanied by an adult. Help reduce our carbon footprint by learning how to plant a tree for success. TJ will also be sharing trimming techniques. Tree care helps aid in the longevity and health of your trees! There is also a modest PV and solar hot water system on their roof, a pedal-powered table saw and lathe in the cellar, and a 'modern root cellar (added to a modern concrete basement). We will be using a variety of recycled materials to create a large-scale group sculpture as well as smaller individual "take home" sculptures. Explore the possibilities of recycled materials for re-use in creative form. Attendees are welcome to stay a little or a long time and to leave when they please.
