Description
Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers and Paralympian Alyssa Gialamas will shine the spotlight on Paralympic sports on March 15 when they take to the red carpet at the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association?s annual gala: ?The Golden Age of Hollywood.? Grevers and Gialamas are Honorary Chairs of the GLASA gala, an annual event that raises funds for GLASA?s sports and wellness programming for children, teens, and adults, including injured military, who have a physical or visual disability. Grevers is a Lake Forest native and six-time Olympic swimming medalist (two gold and one silver in Beijing 2008 and two gold and one silver in London 2012). He attended Lake Forest High School and Northwestern University, and he is a perennial member of the U.S. National Team. Gialamas, of Naperville, placed 5th in the 2012 Paralympics for the 200-meter freestyle and won four Silver Medals in the 2011 Parapan American Games. She is a senior at Waubonsie Valley High School and is a six-time Illinois State Champion. Alyssa is currently on the US National Paralympic Swim Team. GLASA?s gala will be held from 7-11 p.m. on Saturday March 15, 2014 at Fields BMW in Northfield. Guests can try their luck at casino-style games and check out world-class cars while enjoying the sounds of Jazz in the Forest. The event also features inspirational insights from GLASA athletes, live and silent auctions, and culinary treats from a variety of top North Shore restaurants, including Marcello?s North in Northbrook, Longitud315 in Highwood; Authentico, Francesca?s Intimo, and Lovells of Lake Forest; Savanna House in Wadsworth; and The Happ Inn in Northfield. Renowned chef Gale Gand and Chicago?s top caterers Jewell Events Catering and Food for Thought will provide delectable desserts, with spirits courtesy of Kloss Distributing. Proceeds from the evening will help fund year-round daily adaptive sports and recreational programs, such as wheelchair basketball, goalball, wheelchair track/field, swimming, and sled hockey and provide financial assistance for more than 63% of GLASA athletes, through the Athlete Scholarship Fund. GLASA also serves as a resource for schools to integrate students with disabilities into their school athletic programs. "We are so delighted and honored to have Alyssa and Matt as our chairs. This gala is so important to support GLASA, and for many this is where the dreams of becoming a Paralympian start. It doesn't matter whether you are a Paralympian or an individual just looking to become active for the first time - the funds raised support our motto of ?Let No One Sit on the Sidelines,?" said Cindy Housner, Executive Director and Founder of Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association. GLASA is headquartered in Lake Forest and serves children and adults with physical or visual impairments in communities throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
